Archaeological Exploration of the town of Ajaccio

From 2006 to 2009, the Regional Laboratory of Archaeology (LRA) carried out three years (there was no campaign 2007)-inventory diachronic exploration on the town at the request of the municipality of Ajaccio and after official authorization of the Regional Archaeology Service (DRAC - Ministry of Culture and Communication).
The prospecting

2006 Limited to the area east of the town, this campaign has helped to discover or identify 11 sites and site index: an index site for the Neolithic or Bronze Age, a site index and a site for the protohistoric; two sites and three indices for ancient sites and two sites for the Modern period, a site for the contemporary period.
The campaign dealt only with the eastern part: a rectangle from Ajaccio (Pietralba them Salines), up towards the north-east along the national road to Mezzavia Caldaniccia then east, along the northern boundary of the town of Ajaccio, then down south to the mouth of the Gravona, near Tower Capitello. This area is currently under development Important (Pietralba, Mezzavia Vazzio, confinement) and has several archaeological remains known as Mount San Angelo or confined. This area was divided into two sectors:

Campaign 2006: study areas

Area 1 is composed of grasslands, cultivated grain or devoted to pasture, large plots demarcated in most cases by hedgerows of natural vegetation. There are also the cultivation of fruit trees and vegetables, and livestock. The average altitude is about fifteen feet, and rises to 65 meters on the end a small hill to the north.
This area is irrigated by the river Gravona, whose banks are often inaccessible because of dense vegetation. Reading the ground is more or less easy depending on function plots (grazing and different cultures).
This area has been prospected by Laurent Casanova in 2003, when his approach on the lower valley of the Gravona [1] . He highlighted the occupation of the area in the Neolithic (Bastelicaccia surrounding communities) and in antiquity, in lowland areas, which could be at least the Late Empire [2] . Three years after its passage, the alluvium, the various developments and especially the new items for plowing the land has led to other discoveries. Everything leads us to believe that new pedestrian surveys, performed over time and at various times of the year would uncover new clues. The particularity of this sector is to plain contain a high proportion of remains of antiquity.
Indeed, the six sites or indices listed, four are assigned to antiquity. Site No. 1 is a spreading of fragments of amphorae and tiles near a small mound-shaped elongated up sediment and boulders on the river about 20 m. long and 4 m. wide, the edge of fields and scrub. Site No. 2 is a spreading diffuse and weak, bordering fields. Site No. 3 is a strong spray of fragments of tile and brick hook without much equivocation that reflects an ancient structure at that particular location
Finally, the site index No. 6 is a low spreading diffuse involving Small fragments of eroded tiles hooks and strongly magnetic iron slag.
Two other periods are represented in the 1: a site index (No. 4) citing early history, with a flint isolated, bordering fields in a wake of plowing. Another site is attributed to the modern period (No. 5), with a strong spray of hollow tiles, fragments of building mortar (lime), fragments of dark shale (roof covering called "Genoese slate"?) glass, ceramic whiteware and blue decorations (18th century).

Unlike the previous plain area, Sector 3, hilly, is composed of hills whose highest point is Monte San Angelo, which shows the altitude of 238 meters. It includes a fairly dense vegetation, the scrub is often high, making prospecting difficult, especially near streams. Besides the cultivation of the vine (Peraldi field), this area has some pasture and agro-pastoral farms.
The southwestern part is composed of former holdings of oaks and has a wide network of motorable tracks still passable. Immediate vicinity of the airport, most of peaks or ridge lines include defense systems, anti-aircraft dating from World War II. It includes trenches and small circular cavities. No trace has been identified during this research trails.
sector confines and the lands north to the slopes of San Angelo, consists of scrub oak and cork Peraldi the vineyards and has not yielded evidence of archaeological or even lately.
Instead, the area north of Pietralba delivers major indexes occupations, land served by roads and motorable tracks reveal a modern and contemporary ceramics galore (dating from the late 18th century to early 20th century) , small fragments of pottery and fragments of eroded tiles that are reminiscent of ancient times (Site and site index No. 9). The antiquity is also represented by the index of site N ° 7, where we find a spread of protohistoric ceramics but also antique (amphora). We finally find
occupation likely in the late Neolithic or Bronze Age. Indeed, the site index No. 10 is composed of ceramic fragments attributed to this period as well as a pit man (?) That evokes a similar structure unearthed at an archaeological evaluation prior to the construction of the subdivision Santa Maria in the town of Monticello (Haute-Corse) [3] and interpreted as a possible burial.

The prospecting 2008

Limited to the central part of the town, this campaign has helped to discover or identify 34 sites and site index: 2 index site for the Neolithic, 3 for the Bronze Age, 4 site index and a site for the Iron Age, and 4 clues to ancient sites, 6 sites in the Middle Ages; 8 sites for the Modern era; 11 sites for the contemporary period.
The 2008 campaign has two sectors: Sector 3 and Sector 4 according to the principle of counting continues (The 2006 campaign also included two sectors, sector 1 and sector 2).

Area 3 extends eastward Mezzavia road Alata west and Punta San Simeone in the north to the urban area of Ajaccio south. It is a sector composed of hills, which itself consists of meadows and oak groves. It is characterized by high occupancy protohistoric and Antique to the sides and foot of the Punta San Simeone, as in places called A and Suarella Arzuta. This period is also represented by A Punta di Lisa culmination of a mountain range oriented East-West and overlooking the town of Ajaccio.

Area 4 extends from the road Alata east to the Col de Saint-Antoine to the west, and Punta di Lisa north up the road from St. Anthony South .. This sector is characterized by the presence of several sites attributed to the late Middle Ages, as the San Remediu Romanesque chapel, or the castellu di moneta has

The prospecting
2009 Restricted to the western half of the town The campaign has revealed 29 sites or site index: 3 for the Neolithic and / or the early history, one for the Middle Ages, 3 for the period modern and 22 for the contemporary period. The 2009 campaign has two sectors, sector 5 and sector 6.
Sector 5 includes the Saint-Antoine and the Crest Trail, characterized by high occupancy in the contemporary period (fountains, quarries, agro-pastoral activities, the height of the Second World War ...). There is however a prehistoric site: Cinaraggia, located on the Crest Trail.
Sector 6 deals Capo di Feno-and its surroundings, it is composed of plains and hills bucolic character emmaquisés, access difficult. This sector has been a fairly superficial approach lacking time but also by difficulties of access (maquis and private properties). This part of the town of Ajaccio reveals, too, an agro-pastoral occupation sizeable characterized by a high density area in wheat.

After three years of research, 75 sites were surveyed throughout the town of Ajaccio. Some areas were rich in discoveries, as in plain or Gravona Arzuta locality and its environs, with several sites attributed to antiquity. Other sectors have revealed little sites, as the sector 6 of Capo di Feno-Sanguinaires them. Excluding the plains immediately north of the city of Ajaccio and Gravona, occupied in ancient times, sites are often located on the peaks and ridge lines, including those attributed to the prehistoric and Middle Ages.
