Presentation LRA

The Regional Laboratory of Archaeology, 1901 Association supported by the Territorial Community of Corsica since 2005, including a mission to educate the young audience for archaeological research island. To do this, teaching projects are conducted during school hours but also outside school hours. The themes relate to a period, an archaeological site, know-how or a town in particular the choice of the teacher with whom projects are developed. Outputs at archaeological sites complement the theoretical framework to achieve learning. Finally, the LRA began systematically handicrafts to reproduce or learn a technique, an archaeological object or structure. This work lead to individual or collective creations that are the subject of exhibitions at the end of the school year.
actions in schools are put in place thanks to the support of many partners including the ISTAC, the CTC, the OCCE, local partners Contract through the local education and school cooperatives. The City of Ajaccio has initiated workshops on Wednesday and during school holidays since 2008.

addition to its educational mission, the LRA conducts fieldwork among the great Commons Ajaccio (Ajaccio, Alata, Appietto, Coti-Chiavari-Prugna Grosseto, Sarrola-Carcopino) and townships of the Cinarca, Sorru of Two and Two Sevi to better know and understand the occupation of these territories. This work can enrich the national archaeological map (DRAC Corsica) and also respond to requests for development Local Development Plan (PLU) by verifying the presence or absence of archaeological sites in the right zoning.

This intervention framework provides a coherent and constructive approach, from research to mediation with young audiences and the general public (conferences, seminars).

Why an exhibition on the premises of ISTAC?

The exhibition runs from 25 January to 07 March 2011 at ISTAC permits a portion of the work done by the LRA in recent years. We wanted this exhibition is chronological order to present the widest possible strengths of Archaeology Corsica through replicas and models made by children of different grade levels (from 5 years to 15 years). These children work are associated with posters designed by the LRA and the CRDP de Corse to provide a theoretical framework accessible to visitors. Among these posters, three of them were made by researchers who were asked at the symposium organized by the LRA from 12 to 14 November in the Diamond area in Ajaccio: Kewin Fishing Quilichini and Emilie Tomas. The third poster was designed by Pierre Comiti, archaeologist of the LRA.

The choice of venue was made because of the ongoing partnership between the LRA and the association to Meridian - CCSTI Corsica whose mission is to disseminate to all audiences of Science (Science and Society report ). In this context, the ISTAC Corsican LRA seeks to illustrate the work of research and enhancement of the archaeological heritage. This is the logical outcome of this productive partnership between the two associations that work for scientific culture in Corsica.

procedure exposure

Part 1: "The cave paintings"

collective
These paintings were made in the workshops on Wednesday, the City of Ajaccio (children 7 to 11 years). The youth were introduced to artistic practices Paleolithic 30,000 years ago or so. We worked on the bestiary of animals (mammoths, aurochs, rhinoceros, horses, etc..) Hands and positive signs associated with these representations. We tried to respect the color code (different earth tones) but always use natural minerals. Before breeding, these representations were carefully observed in photos or slide shows at screenings to be aware of the realism in the reproduction by prehistoric man.

Part 2: "The Neolithic village"

Time passes, we are in the sixth millennium. The men gradually become sedentary because of new activities related to a new environment. It's hotter than Paleolithic, forests occupy a large area, wild animals disappear or adapt by moving, other species are emerging. The man gradually some of these domestic species (pig, goat, sheep) and also plants (legumes, cereals). These domestications LEAD storage constraints, grazing, monitoring inducing a prolongation of the occupation in one place. So the houses are grouped in villages where daily activities are organized: livestock, cultivation of plants, crafts (pottery, stone cutting tools for the grinding of grain to make flour, etc.). but also hunting and fishing.

Part 3: "The fortified sites"

II and I. In thousands, places of habitation are changing. Lowland sites are abandoned, rocky headlands. Men invest naturally protected sites while emphasizing this aspect in building defensive fortifications. The iconic building is the Torre, tapered circular tower comprising a ground floor and at least one floor vaulted probably intended for storage and processing of food group, including cereals. These commodities are up in small parts made in the thickness of the walls. Torre these are protected by walls in the form of successive terraces which positions the village. The monumentality of this architecture implies a real need for protection against neighboring groups or more distant from more distant regions. Over the centuries, also a place of secure storage, it is likely that Torre had also acquired a defensive role and have been used as a dungeon for Territorial Surveillance.

At the same time, rock paintings (Grotta scritti) return image representation by warlike men warriors schematized (helmet, sex enlarged).

Part 4: "Antiquity"

Corsica knows the arrival of several Mediterranean peoples from 565 BC Greeks, Carthaginians and Etruscans inhabited the eastern coast. The Greeks based Alalia and leave much evidence of the splendor of this community. A necropolis contains hundreds of graves incineration, burial or simple coffin. The red figure vases show a luxurious imported crafts in which the themes Festive majority (dancing, banquets, marine motifs, scenes of music, satire, grape harvest, etc.).. These vessels are associated with weapons (helmet, armor, daggers, leggings, swords).

of Alalia Romans captured in 259 BC and founded Aleria. Corsica will be under Roman rule until the sixth century is 800 years. To illustrate the Roman rule, we present a small recreation of a tomb saddleback (under tiles). This is a true design to accommodate the remains of the deceased or a reduction (as observed in Alban).

Part 5: "The Middle Ages"

The exhibition ends with two posters devoted to the Middle Ages: the imported pottery and tower houses.

To illustrate the imported pottery from the Middle Ages, we referred to the hamlet of Montichji (Alata) occupied the fourteenth to the sixteenth century. The study shows that the workshops pisano-Ligurian are the main exporters of fine ceramics, primarily for the table alongside the richest productions of Provence and to a lesser extent the manufacture of Valencia. Associated with this dresser, a ceramic shaped local (pots with handles of shopping cart) to rough paste containing asbestos fibers in the paste is well represented. The presence of fibers is an indicator of the production areas since the deposits are only located in the northeast of Corsica. The discovery of this pottery reflects regional trade and it is not impossible to believe that asbestos was mined in soil containing asbestos and exported throughout the island.

The tower houses are defensive structures built in the sixteenth century which Some bear inscriptions including one of Appietto dated April 7, 1570. At that time Corsica is particularly vulnerable to raids Barbary event that could motivate the construction of the building.
